Provides leadership and operational command during overnight hours, ensuring campus security, facility protection, alarm monitoring, emergency response, and administrative accountability. Position is classified as essential personnel under college policy and is subject to college and department policies regarding essential personnel. Performs essential duties related to security work as identified by management during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate.
The Third Shift Supervisor serves as the highest-ranking officer on duty overnight and exercises independent decision-making authority in the absence of daytime administration.
Duties:
- Serves as ranking officer during third shift operations.
- Responds to calls for service, and assumes command of incidents.
- Assists in overseeing panic fob accountability, activation response, and documentation.
- Participates in student orientation, safety planning initiatives and safety presentations, as needed.
- Assists 2nd Shift Supervisor with Governors’ School Sunday Camcard access procedures, as needed.
- Conducts investigations; gathers information through interviews, and prepares detailed reports.
- Exercises independent judgment in determining reasonable suspicion, detention, search, or arrest or connects with law enforcement.
- Supervises, trains, mentors, and corrects assigned personnel.
- Reviews and approves reports written by assigned personnel for accuracy and compliance.
- Ensures completion of daily activity reporting prior to shift conclusion.
- Assists with scheduling coordination and coverage adjustments.
- Assists with compiling monthly departmental statistics.
- Contributes to operational (OPS) planning initiatives.
- Assists with event planning involving 3rd shift staffing considerations.
- Coordinates with Raleigh Police Department and emergency services when necessary.
- Patrols campus by vehicle or foot, and directs patrol operations and systematic building security checks.
- Controls access to campus and facilities ensuring campus facilities are secured in accordance with institutional policy.
- Enforces parking regulations and performs traffic control in accordance with institutional policy.
- Deals firmly and courteously with assigned personnel and the public.
Skills Needed:
- Knowledge of advanced law enforcement methods, security methods, and overnight risk management.
- Knowledge of laws of arrest, evidence, search and seizure, and probable cause standards.
- Knowledge of campus safety practices and event security coordination.
- Ability to supervise personnel and review documentation effectively.
- Ability to make sound decisions in high-activity and high-visibility environments with limited supervision.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Ability to respond calmly and decisively during emergencies.
- Ability to observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Key interfaces:
- Students, faculty, and staff (as needed overnight).
- Student Affairs and Residence Life staff (especially during evening hours).
- Governors’ School personnel (seasonally).
- Raleigh Police Department and other emergency services.
Education & Experience:
- High School Diploma (required).
- Current NC Driver License and clear driving history.
- CPR and First Aid Certification (required or ability to obtain).
- Prior supervisory or lead officer experience preferred.
Working conditions & physical demands:
- Overnight work schedule including weekends and holidays.
- Frequent outdoor patrol exposure.
- Driving requirement on and off campus.
- Occasional lifting of 10–100 lbs.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and respond to emergencies for extended periods.
- Ability to respond physically to emergencies when necessary.
