Responsible for performing tasks that preserve, maintain and enhance the campus grounds. Position is classified as essential personnel under college policy and is subject to college and department policies regarding essential personnel. Performs essential duties related to facilities work as identified by management during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate.
Duties:
- Removes snow from sidewalks, courtyards, parking lots, etc. using shovels and snow plows.
- Cleans sidewalks, entrances, courtyards and private roads using brooms and power sweepers. Collects litter, trash and recyclables.
- Assists in chemical cleaning and/or sandblasting of sidewalks or building surfaces to remove stains and graffiti, when required.
- Weeds, prunes, trims and generally maintains the gardens, shrubs, lawns and trees on the grounds of the facilities.
- Assists in repairs of sidewalks, fences, signs, parking lots and private streets.
- Repairs and maintains equipment during off-seasons and during inclement weather, as required.
- Duties may include inclement weather safety responsibilities, including the removal of snow, ice and/or branches, and other related responsibilities as necessary due to inclement weather.
- Duties may include activities related to preparation or clean-up during emergency situations.
- May be required to work during campus closures.
- Performs other related duties as necessary or as assigned by supervision or management.
Qualifications:
Skills Needed:
- Must have knowledge of groundskeeping equipment and proper horticultural techniques.
- Must be able to work primarily outdoors.
- Must be able to effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with supervisor, coworkers, customers and others.
Key Interfaces:
- May work in tandem with other Grounds Staff, must be able to work as a team and individually.
Education, Experience, Certifications, etc.:
- A high school education is preferred.
- Other coursework and/or training in proper horticultural techniques or groundskeeping experience is preferred.
- Valid NC Driver License preferred.
Working conditions & physical demands:
- Works in moderate noise outdoors, and drives around campus in maintenance golf carts and other vehicles.
- Frequent standing and operating machinery. Frequent bending and lifting. Frequent walking.
- Often lifts up to 100 lbs.
- May be required to work during periods of inclement weather.
