The assistant teacher is to act as a member of the staff team alongside the director/lead teacher and assistant director/lead teacher. This person will be responsible for all aspects of caregiving, actively supporting the implementation of the curriculum and building of relationships with the families. This position is a part-time, temporary, short-term assignment.

Administration
1. Support the director and assistant director with administrative duties as needed (e.g., safety checks, licensing requirements).
2. Serve as the full-day substitute for the director or assistant director at times of absences, supporting the completion of administrative duties as assigned by the director or assistant director for that day(s).

Caregiving
1. Model high quality care including treating children with respect and utilizing positive guidance. Encourage children’s problem solving and self-help skills.
2. Treat basic caregiving as a vital part of the curriculum by showing respectful caregiving through talking to the child, involving the child in the task, and recognizing the important interaction of one-on-one basic care.
3. Take initiative in all aspects of the program including diapering, meal preparation, and clean up.
4. Provide children with a wide variety of experiences by the setting up of environments and time to explore them freely.
5. Understand basic child development demonstrated through patience and realistic expectations.
6. Learn to recognize the cues of the children to balance quiet/active activities, indoor/outdoor activities, and group/individual activities as needed by the children.
7. Respond to both the engagement and disengagement cues of the children.
8. Encourage language development.
9. Support the director and assistant director with providing and implementing daily activities based on the interests and developmental goals of the children.
10. Be available as a resource for students and visitors who seek knowledge and support with caregiving.

Health and Safety
1. Adhere to all licensing, health, safety, and other state requirements.
2. Practice good hand washing procedures for self and children.
3. Encourage healthy eating by modeling and offering good choices.
4. Ensure the safety of the children by reporting/removing dangerous toys/equipment.
5. Follow proper diapering procedures.
6. Ensure the safety of the children at all times while continuing to trust the children to know their own limits.
7. Report incidents/accidents to the director and/or assistant director.

Interactions with Work-Study and Lab Students
1. Act as a role model of high-quality childcare.
2. Support work study and lab students on an ongoing basis.
3. Refer students’ questions to the director and assistant director as needed.
4. Never leave a lab student alone with a child.
5. Observe the interactions of the work study and lab students with the children to give feedback to the director and/or assistant director of successes, concerns, or identification of potential future staff members.

Written Records
1. Participate in maintaining the “daily sheet” on each child (i.e. record diaper changes, meals, naps, anecdotes about a child’s day, etc.).
2. Participate in the documentation of written journals on the children.
3. Support the collection of observational data and maintenance of child portfolios.

Professionalism
1. Maintain confidentiality of the children, families, and staff of EBH.
2. Communicate with the director and assistant director on a regular basis in all aspects of the program (i.e., questions, concerns, and ideas).
3. Build a supportive team by attending staff meetings, settling personal disputes, and maintaining a positive attitude.
4. Maintain a commitment to professionalism by promoting the center’s philosophy and educational objectives.
5. Engage in ongoing staff development to fulfill State training requirements and improve personal and professional skills.

Families
1. Communicate openly and in a positive manner with the families.
2. Be sensitive, responsive, and welcoming to the families.
3. Attend EBH sponsored family events.

Attendance
1. Arrive to work on time and fulfill the required hours each day.
2. For possible leave of absence, give the director written notification at least two weeks in advance.
3. Notify the director of any changes in the work schedule.
4. Assist with finding a substitute caregiver when absence is necessary.
5. A notice of thirty days upon resignation is requested to the HES Department Chair.

Health/Medical Requirements
1. Complete and provide the qualification letter for the NCDHHS criminal background check and fingerprints to the director prior to the start date.
2. Complete and provide documentation of a physical examination, signed by a physician or authorized health professional, that indicates that the person is emotionally and physically fit to care for children, to the director prior to the start date.
3. Submit a negative TB test or chest X-ray to the director prior to the start date.
4. Provide documentation of immunization or proof of immunity for measles, mumps, pertussis, and varicella upon employment and a influenza vaccine each year as recommended by the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
5. Complete annually a Health Questionnaire to be kept on file.

Staff Evaluation and Development Plan
1. Meet with the EBH Director annually for staff evaluation, to establish goals, and to develop an action plan to meet those goals.
2. Attend a follow up meeting planned during the annual evaluation to review progress of goals set thus maintaining on-going supervision of work performance.
